Cassone

Reference No. : 0618

A seventeenth century north Italian walnut cassone.

A piece of exceptional quality, colour and patina, with panelled carving in great relief.

The lid of the cassone is made from one great piece of walnut. With a guilloche moulded carved edge.

The front carved panel with a central carved armmorial flanked with a pair of winged figures, scrolled foliage and a male and female figure completes the panel at each end .

Along the base are tightly entwined fruits, berries walnuts and foliage bound in a ribbon along the entire front bottom edge in.

All the fruit and foliage carved into the front panel suggests to me that the figure on either end could indeed be Adam and Eve .

Raised on substantial lion paw carved feet.

Original lock, and all in original carved condition
