At Twig of Tetbury, Su Daybell’s shop in the town, she displays antique brown furniture with her own abstract paintings. At home, too, she might decide to place a bowl by a modern ceramic artist against 17th-century panelling. 

“It’s a question of buying good quality design and craftsmanship,” she says. “In 20 years’ time a piece of good brown furniture will be in great condition.”
